Think about all the famous white village sceneries that come to your mind when you hear someone mention Santorini in Greece. Flowy white curtains, bright white architecture with blue doors and roofs and vibrant pink bougainvillea flower bushes - in the Eastern part of Santorini you can find exactly that in the charming village Oia. The magical Greek island is not only famous for its jet-set travelers but also for its golden sunset, luxury hotels and friendly people but for world famous sights such as the blue dome churches and Cycladic windmills. We decided it’s time to see the famous island Santorini for ourselves and jetted from Munich to Santorini with Aegean Airlines.
We’re checking in to the chic and hip resort Santorini Secret Suites & Spa hotel in the heart of Oia. Skillfully designed around the rough volcano cliffs, this luxurious 18-suite boutique hotel is perfectly situated on one of the world’s most unique islands, overlooking the glistening waters of the Aegean Sea. There seems to be something in the air here - the blues glow deeper, the whites shine brighter and the salty ocean breeze tastes like summer.
The friendly team explain in detail the geography of Santorini, the points of interests and available activities while showing us around the impressive property with its infinity pool, Asian-Greek fusion restaurant called “Black Rock” as well as the Spa area. We experience the luxury and tranquility of the stylish adult-only Santorini Secret Suites & Spa straight away and immerse ourselves in the beauty of this unique place. The entire hotel architecture is inspired by traditional Cycladic island architecture and small colorful details of stone red and turquoise blue incorporate a modern twist to the stylish Santorini decor.
We’re welcomed to Suite No 11, the honeymoon suite in the upper hotel area. It’s a glorious cave-style suite equipped with everything you could wish for: there’s a private pool with panoramic volcano caldera view, oversize round bed, sun deck, living room area with fitness corner, a large bathroom with walk-in rain shower and an additional aromatherapy shower. The suite interior and exterior are luxuriously furnished in typical bright Santorini tones of stone grey and washed whites. Soft linens and aquatic lamps compliment the relaxed sophisticated atmosphere and invite guests to feel at home straight away. Organicly shaped art pieces and lamps bring a sense of modern nature to the suite, as do the stone washbasins and pebble-shaped Thierry Mugler amenities. The minibar is well-equipped and a nespresso coffee machine is provided. The large built-in closets were equipped with soft robes, slippers and an ample amount of hangers sufficient for longer stays. There’s also a sofa & TV corner, however we never felt the need to use it. Even at night we enjoyed gazing at the glittering city lights and starry night sky.
Each of the 18 polished suites come with a sun deck veranda and either a private jacuzzi or pool. Since all hotels in Oia are constructed around steep cliffs, the suite verandas of every hotel lack a bit in privacy but we did not feel disturbed at all. It’s actually quiet nice to watch the cliffside happenings while splashing around in our private pool. One of our favorite suite feature were the oversized sun loungers with soft cushions and large pool towels. We could easily spend hours just relaxing by the pool and soaking up the panoramic view of the caldera with its surrounding soft-shaped white architecture.
The culinary offerings at Santorini Secret Suites & Spa are exceptional and it is clear that the chefs put lots of creativity and love into their dishes. Every day, a sumptuous selection of your preferred breakfast dishes, juices and coffee specialties are served on your private veranda. There are options for everyone and almost any specific type of dietary requirement can be accommodated. The dedicated team serves breakfast on a neatly arranged tray in the comfort of your suite. Definitely try the snickers pancakes and spinach-feta stuffed pastries. I find, breakfast is enjoyed even better while splashing around in the pool!
For lunch and dinner the scenic cliffside restaurant “Black Rock” serves culinary delights with a modern-traditional Greek fusion twist. The minimalistic restaurant is all about the stunning views. No wonder, this restaurant often serves as a chic location for weddings, special dinners and events. A must-try is the passion fruit ceviche and the tomato balls with feta cream - every bite is delicious.
Since the Santorini Secret Suites and Spa is perfectly located at the start of the main shopping street in the very heart of Oia, all the famous sights and view points can be reached within only a short stroll along the white marble promenade. Picturesque views over the famous blue-domed churches as well as countless bars, restaurants and lounges can be found all around Oia, and we loved the fact that nothing was further away than a 15-minute stroll. Munch on delicious sweet and savory crepes, buy stylish Greek ceramics or browse through endless boho-style Boutiques. Explore the windmills, ancient city ruins and most importantly - the famous golden sunset viewing points only a few steps away.
We truly enjoyed our stay at the Santorini Secret Suites & Spa with its pristine white design, private pools, contemporary chic and smooth service; it’s a leading choice for chic accommodation in Santorini and I can absolutely recommend to stay there. The resort’s location behind a cliff ledge offers wind protection from Santorini’s general windy climate.
Suites at the Santorini Secret Suites & Spa start from €350 in low season and from €700 in high season including breakfast and free wifi. A transfer from the airport to the hotel can either be pre-booked for approx. €45 or a public taxi for €40 can be hired directly at the airport.
